ExA2Bio Project

ExA2Bio – Training tomorrow's talent in bioproduction and biotherapies

Presentation

ExA2Bio is a winning project in Compétences et Métiers d’Avenir (CMA) call for projects, led by l’École Supérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg (ESBS) and his consortium.

With €3.2 million in funding from l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR), ExA2Bio aim to:

  • Strengthen training in bioproduction and biotherapies through specific courses
  • Promote the professional integration of graduates and future talent by training them for specialized professions,
  • Deploy a unique system with pathways enabling everyone to go further in their training towards excellence in biotherapy

Details of all possible pathways in the ExA2Bio project and associated professions

Focus on the BUT Engineering pathway

One of the many pathways included in the project is the one linking the BUT in Biological Engineering offered at the IUT Louis Pasteur to the engineering studies at ESBS.

Admission requirements:

  • Application via ParcourSup to the BUT Biological Engineering program, SAB track.
  • Indicate in your motivation letter your intention to join the ExA2Bio program.
  • Selection is based on academic results and a motivation interview with a joint ESBS–IUT jury.
  • Starting in the second year, the program alternates between academic courses and work placements within companies in the sector.
  • Admission to ESBS is guaranteed, subject to satisfactory academic performance and attendance.

Project Governance

The governance of the ExA2Bio project is based on a steering committee that brings together academic, institutional, and industrial representatives.
This committee ensures strategic coordination, monitors progress, and maintains strong connections among the partners to guarantee the project’s successful implementation.

Steering Committee

The steering committee is composed of the following members:

  • Dominique Bagnard – Director, ESBS (University of Strasbourg)
  • Jérôme Carrayrou – Head of the Biological Engineering Department, Institut Louis Pasteur (University of Strasbourg)
  • Anne-Marie Dechampesme – Head of Training Division, Continuing Education Service (University of Strasbourg)
  • Caroline Dreyer – CEO, Health Competitiveness Cluster Biovalley France
  • Isabelle Faller – IA-IPR Biochemistry – Biotechnology
  • Sylvie Fournel – Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences
  • Séverine Fraga Huzjan – Director, EASE (University of Strasbourg)
  • Maria Zeniou – Head of the Master’s in Drug and Health Product Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy (University of Strasbourg)

Partners

The ExA2Bio project is led by the École Supérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg (ESBS), with the support of a consortium of academic, institutional, and industrial stakeholders committed to advancing bioproduction and biotherapies.

Among our key partners:

The project relies on a network of partner companies that are deeply involved in co-developing and implementing the training modules. This close collaboration ensures high-quality training, directly aligned with the evolving needs of the biotechnology and bioproduction industries.

Equipment

At the heart of the ExA2Bio framework lies the EASE platform, which plays a central role.
A true learning factory, EASE offers students and professionals a unique, realistic, and immersive training environment that faithfully replicates the conditions of an industrial bioproduction site.

Participants in the ExA2Bio program will benefit from hands-on training sessions at EASE, allowing them to acquire advanced technical skills that are directly applicable in professional settings.

In addition, a major component of the project focuses on modernizing the technical facilities of the academic partners through investments in new equipment and technologies.
These upgraded infrastructures will provide students and professionals with a learning environment aligned with current and future industrial standards, ensuring cutting-edge training in bioproduction innovation.
