Study and Research Programme

The synthetic biology network in the Upper Rhine Valley (RSB-RhinSup), supported by the European Union’s INTERREG IV Programme, has developed a study and research programme in Synthetic Biology.

This new discipline is evolving rapidly, offering fascinating possibilities in several fields:

  • therapeutic treatments (medical, veterinary)
  • preservation of ecosystems (phytosanitary approaches, bioremediation of soils)
  • optimum exploitation of biomass (bioenergy)


The aim is to stimulate the biotechnology sector by strengthening scientific links between the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.


In addition to offering traditional courses leading to the award of Diplôme d’Ingénieur, French engineering schools are able to develop new master’s courses reflecting their skills.

ESBS was authorised to create a master’s reserved for foreign students. This master is centred on a particularly innovative field in biotechnology: Synthetic Biology (Bio-Engineering). This course will be run in close partnership with the universities concerned, as well as the associated laboratory, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT).

Based on a solid reputation in molecular biology and genetic engineering, ESBS is paving the way for a new generation of biotechnologists by strengthening skills in synthetic biology.

All partners (Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Strasbourg) contribute to the teaching and provide placements for students in corresponding laboratories. Teaching will be carried out in a multi-cultural environment and will provide the necessary support for students to enter the job market.
